The EU launches a single digital wallet in 2026: what the EUDI Wallet is and how it will change identification
In 2026, a pan-European digital wallet — the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) — will appear in the countries of the European Union. This mobile app will allow EU citizens and residents to store documents, confirm their identity online and offline and sign legally binding documents — free of charge and with recognition across the entire Union.
The EUDI Wallet is a digital identity wallet being created under the updated eIDAS 2.0 regulation. By 2026, every EU member state is required to provide at least one certified digital wallet compatible with pan-European standards.
The app will make it possible to:
Store an identity document and a driving licence
Use diplomas and professional certificates
Present electronic prescriptions
Manage banking and tax data
Sign documents with an electronic signature
The main advantages of the EU digital wallet
Universality
The wallet will be accepted in all EU countries for obtaining public services, opening bank accounts, registering SIM cards and online authentication on major platforms.
A free qualified electronic signature
Users will be able to sign legally binding documents directly from their smartphone without additional paid services.
Control over personal data
The system is built on the principle of minimising disclosure of information. For example, you can confirm that you are of legal age without revealing your exact date of birth.
Is the digital wallet mandatory?
Use of the EUDI Wallet will be voluntary. However, major online platforms and providers of certain services will be required to accept it as a means of identification.
What will change for citizens and business
The introduction of a single digital wallet may reduce bureaucracy in cross-border services, simplify online identification, speed up processes at banks and government bodies, increase the EU’s digital sovereignty and create a single standard of digital identification in Europe.
