Online shopping will become more accessible

As EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel said, around 30% of shoppers on online resources abandon the idea of making a purchase at the stage of choosing a bank card for payment. This situation benefits no one.

An important step towards solving the problem was the agreement on ending geographical blocking, which comes into force on 3 December 2018. This means that already before Christmas people will be able to shop freely in online stores on websites in other EU countries.

At present only 9-12% of small and medium-sized enterprises do business online outside their own country. The European Union has an interest in the development of online commerce and is ready to support it.

For example, since 1 April every EU citizen can use the option of carrying content along while travelling across the countries of the European Union. As Gabriel noted, from that moment on one can travel freely together with one’s favourite video, sport or film subscriptions.

The WiFi4EU initiative on the availability of the Internet across the EU is also developing. It provides that every state belonging to the EU will be entitled to 15 WiFi4EU vouchers for providing free Internet. 193 Bulgarian municipalities are taking part in the competition.

Other important topics that are relevant at the time when Bulgaria holds the EU presidency include cybersecurity, the abolition of intra-Union roaming and the development of 5G.

Bulgaria is negotiating the allocation of a radio frequency sector that will be used for the development of 5G networks. An agreement on the abolition of roaming has already been signed with the countries of the Western Balkans.

In order to increase security in cyberspace, Bulgaria is taking part in the construction of a European infrastructure of world-class computers with new capabilities – so-called “supercomputers”. The first such supercomputer is planned to appear in Bulgaria within three to four years, in 2021-2022. This will make it possible to shorten individual calculation cycles and will increase cybersecurity for the development of online commerce for medium-sized and small Bulgarian enterprises.
