Electronic vignettes (e-vignettes) have replaced the stickers. Motorists can buy them on the website or through a mobile app.

The «Националното тол управление» system went live on 17 December 2018. From now on drivers do not need to buy stickers and paste them on the windscreen — it is enough to purchase the electronic version.
Conversion
Old paper vignettes that remain valid into 2019 can be converted into digital format on the bgtoll.bg website or at special counters. The information goes straight into the system. To change the format of a vignette you need to enter the vehicle registration number and the validity period of the paper one.
Converting stickers into electronic format is not mandatory. Those who do not do so face no fines. At the same time, the stickers must remain on the windscreen until they expire, even if the vignette has been converted into an electronic one.
The electronic portal and other new features
The electronic portal can handle up to 10 thousand simultaneous visits. According to Anton Antonov, director of «Националното тол управление», this is enough to cope with the initial influx of visitors wishing to buy electronic vignettes or change the format of their existing old ones.
Vignette prices will not change in 2019. From the first of January a new type will appear, intended for use at weekends. The weekend vignette is expected to cost 10 leva and will be valid from Friday midday until late on Sunday evening. This is a good option for those who leave the city only at weekends.
For lorries, vignettes will remain valid until 15 August. After that, vehicles with a load capacity of more than 3.5 tonnes will pay a special toll instead of buying vignettes.
The use of e-vignettes is expected to make drivers’ lives easier. There will no longer be any need to stick labels on the windscreen and carry proof of purchase. Electronic vignettes will be checked automatically.
According to Antonov, the current system is one of the most modern IT systems. Thanks to a well-designed security system, the possibility of hacker attacks is limited as far as possible.
