Obtaining a Bulgarian citizenship certificate will become easier

At present, the waiting period for receiving a citizenship certificate after the Decree is 10 months or more. The reason for such delays has been poor administration. The Ministry of Justice has drawn up a plan to eliminate the delays within a month and a half. From 31 May, open reception of citizens will begin for the issuing of certificates of Bulgarian citizenship.

It will now be possible to serve not only those citizens who have reserved a date and time of visit through the automated system of the “Bulgarian Citizenship” Directorate, but others as well. Here is how reception will be conducted:

• Every day at 9 a.m. an officer of the Directorate will draw up an additional list of citizens to be received on that day, with a limit of up to 150 people. To be included in this list, you must come to the Directorate in person with an identity document and submit a request to the officer.
• Priority for inclusion in the list will be given to persons who hold a permit to reside in Bulgaria issued before the Decree granting citizenship.
• Other persons must provide proof of their registration in the automated system – a printed confirmation of the reserved date and time. Among citizens with a printed confirmation, priority will be given to those who registered earlier.
• Last of all, if the daily limit has not been reached, persons who are not registered in the electronic system and have not reserved a date and time of visit to the Directorate will be served.
