The most in-demand and highest-paying professions in Bulgaria

It is commonly believed that salaries in Bulgaria are low. But that depends on where and for whom. According to the ranking of universities in Bulgaria, the highest salaries – an average of 3000 leva – are earned by graduates of the Faculty of Informatics and Computer Science of Sofia University.

A slightly lower salary awaits graduates of the Faculty of Administration and Management at the American University in Blagoevgrad – they earn an average of 2750 leva per month. Graduates of other institutions usually cannot count on such incomes – they are sometimes offered salaries four times lower.

The most needed professions

Among the highest-paying fields in Bulgaria are informatics, military affairs, the study and extraction of mineral resources, metallurgy, mathematics, public health, medicine, and communication and computer engineering. In these areas salaries average 925 leva, and the percentage of registered unemployed is very low – only 3.74%.

For several years now, the lowest unemployment (less than 1%) and the highest demand for specialists with higher education have been seen in medicine, pharmacology, dentistry, and in military professions.

About a quarter of university graduates leave the country in search of a better life. In other European Union countries they can claim higher salaries than at home. To some extent this explains the shortage of certain specialists. Employers are often willing to hire even a foreigner with a long-term residence permit if he is a top-class professional. This is entirely feasible, although it requires certain formalities, such as obtaining a special permit. For the vast majority of foreigners in Bulgaria, who are denied the right to work as employees, starting their own business remains the option.

Unemployment

Representatives of other professions have been less fortunate. The highest unemployment is in fields such as animal husbandry and history (archaeology). Oddly enough, in a country with a developed tourism industry it is hard for tourism specialists to find work. Difficulties in finding work also await artists – graduates of fine arts faculties.

Of course, the more prestigious the education, the easier it is to find work. Sofia University confidently leads the ranking of Bulgarian universities (in 21 fields out of 24). The Technical University in Sofia holds leading positions in 6 out of 9 fields. The Medical University in Sofia is first in five fields out of five.
