Winter in Bulgaria

Before Christmas, traditional holiday markets open in Bulgarian towns, where you can enjoy mulled wine and buy New Year souvenirs and gifts. Many people come to such markets simply to stroll around and admire the lights.

The mayors of different cities try to decorate the streets as inventively as possible. Sofia hosts concerts, festivals, wine tastings and culinary exhibitions. In Varna, glowing anchors — symbols of the maritime capital — appear along the roads. Burgas has invited numerous performers: throughout December, concerts by various musical groups are held here. In Dobrich, Dyado Koleda (the Bulgarian Father Christmas) arrived on a tractor to light the Christmas tree, and now this tractor has become the main decoration of the square and a tourist attraction.

Shopping centres seem to compete with each other over whose decorations will be the most striking and interesting. The expense pays off: people come to admire the decorations and take photographs, and then, unexpectedly for themselves, start making purchases.

Of course, trips to Christmas markets and shopping centres are not the only possible ways to spend your leisure time. Ice rinks open in many cities, where you can skate for a nominal fee or completely free of charge.

Once you have got cold on the street, it is good to walk around the museums. There are few tourists in winter, and you can admire the exhibits to your heart’s content. An alternative option is the various exhibitions that are constantly organised in the major cities.

Those who prefer a more active pastime can spend time in nightclubs. For people who like a flutter, casinos will be the best choice: many of them also offer interesting holiday programmes and special bonuses for visitors. A healthier and more sporting option is bowling. You can roll a few balls on any day, and the earlier the time you choose for your visit, the lower the prices will be.

And for those who are tired of the cities, there are plenty of interesting offers from hotels and guest houses. While prices at the ski resorts are high in winter, a stay on the coast in the off-season can be very affordable. The main thing is to choose a well-heated hotel, and after that you can enjoy a wonderful holiday in good company.

If you stop thinking of Bulgaria as a country purely for beach holidays, you will not be bored. Numerous forms of entertainment will let you forget about the frosty weather and have a wonderful time while waiting for the beautiful Bulgarian spring.
