Winters in Bulgaria vary, but for a southern country it is unexpectedly cold here during the winter season in any case. On the other hand, there are unconventional ways to warm up — for example, in an open-air hot pool surrounded by snowdrifts.

Bathing in a hot pool with mineral water is not only an original wintertime entertainment, but also a procedure that is quite good for your health. Thanks to their composition, mineral waters have a positive effect on
the functioning of all internal organs, and high temperatures only enhance this positive effect.
There are plenty of such pools in Bulgaria. In this article we will look at the best known of them. The one nearest to Plovdiv, for example, is in the Dolna Banya SPA complex, which is famous the world over for its mineral springs. The water temperature there is 67.8 degrees; it is used in the treatment of rheumatism, dermatological, cardiovascular and nervous diseases, and diseases of the digestive and respiratory systems.
There are also pools here filled with warm mineral water (temperatures from 28 to 43 degrees), a Russian bath, a massage shower, a sauna and massage.
Fans of extreme sensations will like the complex Sapareva Banya, located in the Rila Mountains. In the centre of the town there is a hot mineral geyser — every tourist who comes here tries to capture it in a photo. It is the only geyser of its kind not only in the country but in all of Europe, and its water temperature is 103 degrees. The water in the open-air pool is, of course, not that hot — a little over 30 degrees. It has exceptional healing properties and is suitable for treating joint diseases. In addition to bathing in the warm pools, tourists can also visit the nearby sights — the Rila and Resilovo monasteries, the seven Rila Lakes and the Borovets resort.
Another hot-water pool is located 15 km from Troyan in the Chiflika complex. The open-air pool here operates year-round, but in winter it is harder to reach, since not all the roads across the Balkan Range are open.
The balneological resort of Ognyanovo is also famous for its hot springs. The mineral water temperature in the pools reaches 42.5 degrees. The composition of the local mineral waters is ideally suited to treating diseases of the endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous and digestive systems, as well as of the musculoskeletal system.
Velingrad — a well-known balneological resort — also has hot pools for every taste. Along with bathing in them, visitors to the SPA complex are offered various treatments, from aromatherapy to chocolate massage.
And finally, another resort with thermal springs that is popular among Bulgarians is Varvara. The complex, located not far from the city of Pazardzhik, operates year-round. Guests of the complex are offered a wonderful relaxing stay and, at the same time, treatment of musculoskeletal diseases in the hot mineral waters of the local pools.
Some people come regularly to improve their health with the help of thermal springs, while others visit Bulgaria’s hot pools from time to time to spend a day off in an unusual but pleasant and relaxing setting. Bathing in such pools is a wonderful idea for a winter holiday, instead of the traditional skiing or in addition to it.
