Annual reporting in Bulgaria from 2027: a single system
NSI, the National Revenue Agency (NAP) and the Registry Agency are introducing the "Single Entry Point" information system From 1 January 2027, a new procedure…
A medical insurance policy is a document that no foreigner in Bulgaria can live without. Without a policy you cannot obtain either a visa or a long-term residence permit, and besides, this compulsory health insurance policy is the real and only way to save money if you have to seek medical care in Bulgaria.

Although medical services in Bulgaria are, on the whole, inexpensive, paying for them entirely out of your own pocket is not worthwhile. That is why choosing a policy deserves the greatest possible care.
The main mistake many immigrants in Bulgaria make is focusing on the price of the medical insurance policy. Many are convinced that the more expensive the policy, the better, and choose the most costly of all the offers. In reality, the price of a policy does not correlate with the quality of the services at all. The terms of compulsory insurance for foreigners are practically the same at all insurance companies. As for the likelihood of being reimbursed for your treatment costs, that depends on how correctly the required documents have been drawn up.
How should you choose an insurance policy? It is worth finding out about the insurance company’s reputation — reviews can always be found on the Internet. The insurance terms are the same everywhere, but some insurance companies offer their clients additional benefits that make life much easier.
For example, the insurance company Mediko-21 gives you the option of contacting Russian-speaking coordinators. Anyone who has ever tried to explain their problems to insurance company specialists without sufficient command of the language knows how difficult it is. The coordinators’ knowledge of Russian rules out misunderstandings and confusion, and at the same time saves time in negotiations.
Another advantage of Mediko-21 is that the company works directly with the largest medical institutions. This means that it is enough simply to contact the coordinator when an insured event occurs. There is no need to look for a doctor, no need to collect documents and check how they have been drawn up. The insurers work directly with the doctors, which is very convenient.
The third advantage of Mediko-21 is obvious — the price. A compulsory health insurance policy costs only 140 leva.
A compulsory health insurance policy by no means covers all medical services. Chronic conditions, pregnancy monitoring and preventive check-ups have to be paid for yourself. But there is an alternative: the only voluntary medical insurance policy for foreigners on the market, from Mediko-21. This policy will be useful not only to those who hold a long-term residence permit in Bulgaria, but also to those who live here permanently and pay “здравни осигуровки”, just as Bulgarians do. Such a policy will be a lifesaver for elderly people and those suffering from chronic conditions.
