The Golden Beaches of Albena

Unlike most seaside settlements in the country, Albena was practically uninhabited until the middle of the 20th century. Bulgaria's third-largest resort complex opened in August 1969 on the grounds of a large park.

The original plan was to build the country’s most modern resort here, one that would be a continuation of the town of Balchik, 10 km to the north. But these plans were later abandoned, and Albena became an independent

resort complex. The country’s top leadership took a symbolic part in building the hotels here. The resort was named after the heroine of a story by the well-known Bulgarian writer Yordan Yovkov.

The first tourist to come to Albena was an electrical engineer from Czechoslovakia. Then groups of adults and children began arriving at the resort from the Soviet Union, Poland, the GDR, Czechoslovakia and other socialist countries. Sports competitions and even beauty contests were held here, something impossible in the Soviet Union at that time.

Today Albena remains a fashionable and beautiful resort favoured by well-off tourists, mainly from Germany. In front of the resort there is a bus station and a large free car park; if you wish, you can drive your own car into the resort complex for an additional fee. As before, sports competitions are held here and many athletes from various countries come to relax. In addition, thanks to the gentle slope into the sea, the resort is popular with families with small children. Outdated hotels are gradually being rebuilt and renovated, and today holidaying in Albena is just as prestigious as it was right after this fashionable resort opened.
