Residence in Bulgaria (long-term residence permit)

The grounds on which a long-term residence permit in Bulgaria is granted are set out in Art. 24, para. 1 of the Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria (ЗЧРБ). The main ones are the following:

— representatives of foreign commercial organisations registered with the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry;

— pensioners who have sufficient funds to stay in the country;

— carrying out business activity (this requires registering a company on the territory of Bulgaria), provided that 10 jobs are created for Bulgarian citizens;

— family members of a foreigner who has obtained a long-term residence permit in Bulgaria (family reunification)

It is possible to obtain residence in Bulgaria as a representative of a foreign commercial organisation on the basis of Article 24, para. 1, subpara. 6 of the Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria (ЗЧРБ) — this is the most common option among people below retirement age. After obtaining a type D visa, the applicant comes to Bulgaria and submits the package of documents for the long-term residence permit at the migration office at their place of residence, regardless of where the Representative Office is registered.
